Living & Working In Spain - Alicante To El Campello

Whether in Alicante or El Campello, I have been living in Spain now for coming on 30 years and have seen at first hand the major changes that have taken place here over the last couple of years, with the economical cutbacks having a direct impact on basic necessity items like electricity bills and daily food requirements.

Currently for those who have already decided to take up residence here in Spain, it has been on the news recently about Spaniards being asked to leave Brussels, after being without work for 6 months, so that ruling could affect out of work UK nationals having problems with finding a job.

Back in the late 80s, I remember always having to carry my passport on me as well as actually being stopped by the police and asked to produce my official documents. I could only legally stay for 3 months in Spain and also had a visa stamp in my passport that specified my status as a tourist.

When I decided to start working properly in Spain I become a resident and was given permission to work as an English Teacher. So back in the late 80s and I had to get my recently achieved T.O.E.F.L (teaching English as a foreign language) qualification from Hilderstone College (Broadstairs) recognised by the Spanish education board.

This involved a couple of trips to Madrid and quite a long winded and expensive process, but eventually I had my papers all official to begin living and working in Spain, so no more having to be always be looking over my shoulder.

I became a member of the local shopkeepers association and eventually in about 1995/6 became President of the "AsociaciĆ³n de Comerciantes de Maisonnave" for 6 consecutive years. It was actually working in Spain that improved my understanding of the Spanish language, you might say thrown in at the deep end, but I am now fluent in both written and spoken Spanish.

I have lived in the centre of Alicante, as well as in Albuferreta, Playa San Juan, Alicante Golf and Busot, but I am currently promoting "living in El Campello" and giving advice to other people who may be considering living in this part of Spain, known as the Costa blanca.

Why Holiday Rental Apartments Make Great Property Investments In El Campello

When people look for holiday rentals, in general the property needs to be close to the sea or at least have a swimming pool, and air conditioning would also be important. Holiday makers generally look for sunshine destinations too, and El Campello has plenty of that all year round, with temperatures today reaching 25 degrees, and we're only in February.


The beach in El Campello is a long strip of clean golden sands, and gets packed out in the summer months, so you'll need to get up early for a cool spot by the sea, otherwise you can stroll down to the beach with ease throughout the rest of the year as the Spaniards in general stay away.

Access to El Campello couldn't be easier, with the Alicante airport just a 25 minute drive away, and with Alicante itself just a 2 - 3 hour connection flight away from most major cites in Europe. You will always find cheap flights to Alicante, especially with Easy Jet, Monarch and Ryan Air.

The apartment blocks in El Campello are 95% 5 or 6 storeys high with lift, and you can currently find 2 and 3 bedroom apartments for sale on 1st and 2nd line from about 150.000 Euro. The average asking price just a couple of years ago would have been about 250.000 Euro, so these apartments have now become very interesting property investments.

Rentals in El Campello are also some what lower now than a few years back for both long and short term lets. Long term rentals for 2 and 3 bedroom apartments by the beach range from 550 to 700 Euro per month, though in town that would be between 350 and 550 Euro. In summer high season, weekly rentals by the beach start from 500 Euro, and the season lasts 16 weeks (Mid June - Mid October).

The very best property investments are being sold quite quickly at the moment, with many being auctioned off by the banks, If you are seriously looking for a property investments or holiday home, then do consider El Campello as a very safe bet.
